In my understanding, Apple CarPlay is another (an alternative) user interface of iPhone which enabled using the screen and controls built in automobiles as the front-end and iPhone as the backend.

For CarPlay supported apps installed on the iPhone, users can use the alternative interface on screen and controls built in automobiles to interact with the apps on iPhone once the iPhone is connected to the automobile head unit.
